 Protected Mode
Protected mode is what most modern Operating systems are based around,
without it, you would only beable to access 1MB of memory, and the slightest
bug in any of you code could crash your system. Protected mode offers many
advantages, you can stop programs overwritting each other, you can access
4Gb of memory. The main disadvantage being you cannot access the BIOS, but
again, thes gives you an advantage because it forces you to write your own
drivers which not only gives you more control over the system, but the
BIOS's drivers are very slow and cumbersome. You may want to see my hardware
section for driver info etc.
